In ChatGPT open Settings, Data controls, Export data. A link to a ZIP arrives by email. Drop that ZIP or the conversations.json inside it.

Are edited branches kept?

ChatGPT keeps every edit as a branch. The viewer shows the branch you saw last, from the newest message back to the start.

Are my files uploaded?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Files are read from your disk into memory and the result is generated locally.

Is it free? Are there limits or watermarks?

Free and open source (MIT). There are no file-size caps, daily quotas, accounts or watermarks.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page (and any engine it needs) has loaded, it keeps working without a connection thanks to the service worker cache.

How ChatGPT & Claude Export Viewer works

Your export is read inside this tab. Nothing is uploaded, no account or login is needed, and closing the tab clears it. ChatGPT stores each chat as a tree of edits; the viewer follows it from the last message back to the start, so you see the branch you saw last. Claude exports are a plain list. Hidden system messages are skipped and code blocks are kept.
