Image to ASCII Art

Turn a photo or logo into ASCII text art, in colour or plain, as TXT, HTML or PNG.

Free, no uploads, no sign-up. Runs 100% in your browser.

How Image to ASCII Art works

The picture is shrunk to a grid of characters (half as tall as wide, because letters are tall) and each cell is mapped from dark to light to a ramp of characters. Colour output keeps the original colour of each cell.

Input: JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF. Output: TXT, HTML, PNG.

How to use Image to ASCII Art

  1. Drop a picture.
  2. Set the width and character set.
  3. Copy the text, or download TXT, HTML or PNG.

Tips

  • Most image tools accept many files at once.
  • WebP and AVIF give much smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality.
  • Set a default image quality in Settings. Tools that do not choose their own quality use it.

Image to ASCII Art FAQ

Are my files uploaded?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Files are read from your disk into memory and the result is generated locally.
Is it free? Are there limits or watermarks?
Free and open source (MIT). There are no file-size caps, daily quotas, accounts or watermarks.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page (and any engine it needs) has loaded, it keeps working without a connection thanks to the service worker cache.
