How Background Remover works
Background Remover runs a segmentation model (from @imgly/background-removal) on your device with ONNX Runtime Web, using WebGPU when available. It predicts a mask for the subject, then you can keep transparency, fill a color, or blur the original background.
Input: JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP.
How to use Background Remover
- Drop one or more images onto Background Remover.
- Tune the options. The before/after preview updates live.
- Process the batch.
- Download a single image, or everything as a ZIP.
Tips
- Photos with a clear subject and contrasting background give the cleanest edges.
- Export as PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Background Remover FAQ
- Why does the first use take longer?
- The AI model (about 40 MB) downloads once and is cached by your browser. Your image is never uploaded.
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. This tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Files are read from your disk into memory and the result is generated locally.
- Is it free? Are there limits or watermarks?
- Free and open source (MIT). There are no file-size caps, daily quotas, accounts or watermarks.
- Does it work offline?
- Yes, once the page (and any engine it needs) has loaded, it keeps working without a connection thanks to the service worker cache.
